On Saturday, Maya Hawke joined her Stranger Things cast mates for the premiere of the Netflix hit show’s highly-anticipated fourth season. The actress, who plays Robin, wore a striking Christian Dior dress—one that, if you look closely, tells a lot about the show’s upcoming plot.
“The dress does tell a story,” Hawke confirmed in an email interview with ELLE.com. “The villain we’re fitting this season in Stranger Things is the demobats, and there are all kinds of crazy monsters. They’re opening the lore of what all of this is about and there is a dark menacing force named Vecna who is like the devil. The dress has ‘diablo’ on it, and I feel like it has the spirit of Vecna as well as the ancillary monsters throughout.” (Hawke also carried a tarot card-esque Le Diable clutch.)
Five people worked on Hawke’s long bustier dress at the atelier. It is fully embroidered with silk thread, sequins, and applications of silk fabrics to create the motif.
Hawke worked with Dior to create the premiere look, one based off a previous runway dress. “Many years ago, I saw the photos from the runway show this dress was in and I just really fell in love with it and wanted to wear it,” she said. “There is a lot of symbolism through the dress that relates to the show. I really love the show. After working on it for almost three years, I wanted to show that through my look. Dior was so supportive in helping remake a dress from a past season for this. I wanted to go all out with black and red nails.”
When Hawke got the finished dress, everything was right. “When I first saw it, I was just so happy,” she recalled. “It fits me perfectly. It is exactly what I wanted to be wearing that night.”
“I had such a fun time [getting ready to go],” Hawke added. “I got ready at my mom’s house. We took photos by the piano and I took pictures with my little sister. She even touched up my hair a little. My mom [Uma Thurman] gave me some advice on how to stand.” Hawke’s makeup was done by Gianpaolo Ceciliato using Dior Beauty products, and Peter Butler did her hair for the evening. Nail artist Mo Quinn was behind Hawke’s black and red manicure.
This experience working with Dior only strengthened Hawke’s burgeoning love of style. “I’ve learned so much about fashion in the past couple of years,” she said. “I’ve learned that I really do care about it. The more love and care you put into it, the more you get out of it.”
