If there’s a movie to add to your queue this season it’s Netflix’s Blonde, a new take on the Marilyn Monroe story based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name. The film, which will be released on Sept. 28, recently received an 11-minute standing ovation during its premiere at the Venice Film Festival—so you know it’s worth the hype.
While Ana de Armas stars as Marilyn onscreen, she’s been paying tribute to the Hollywood legend on the red carpet too. In Venice, she wore a custom Louis Vuitton gown that channeled the iconic gown Monroe wore in the film The Seven Year Itch (it’s the one that flies up over the street grate–you know it). And at the Blonde premiere in L.A. on Tuesday, de Armas drew inspiration from Marilyn again, this time for her beauty look. The actress spoke to ELLE.com about her glam for the big night.
Marilyn had such a signature look. What is your signature beauty look?
Eye makeup is always what makes me feel I’m awake and ready for the day. So, I’ll always wear mascara and maybe do a little wing on the eye so I feel ready—and usually some blush too.
What was the inspiration for the L.A. premiere’s beauty look?
For the L.A. premiere look, we wanted to pay homage to Marilyn Monroe with a classic winged liner look, but made it more modern with really beautiful metallic, earthy eyeshadows. We wanted to keep the skin really radiant and luminous paired with the perfect nude lip.
How do you and your beauty team collaborate for events?
My team is great about pulling reference images and we all sit down and have an open discussion about that we think the look should be. We’ll have the dress in front of us so we can come up with the most harmonious look to complement the dress.
How do you channel a particular vibe to get ready for a premiere?
I like to have flowers and different kinds of candles around while I’m getting ready. I love jasmine and rose candles. We also like to play music during glam–my glam team and I alternate between who gets to choose the playlist–but something upbeat and fun!
