Season 1 of A League of Their Own premiered on Prime Video on August 12, 2022, and by then, co-creator Will Graham said that the team was already writing season 2. The show is based on the film of the same name, a classic rainy day movie pick for anyone who grew up in the nineties, starring Geena Davis and Tom Hanks. Set during WWII, it follows a women baseball players who had their own league as the men were sent to war. The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was founded in 1943 and lasted until 1954.
The series has considerably more room to include new characters and plot lines, and to explore some themes that were more implied than explicit. For example, the show is considerably more queer and actually addresses the truth of how many members AAGPBL members were hiding their identities in order to stay in the league. It also much more directly addresses the history of segregation in the sport and the African-American leagues playing at the same time.
Here’s what we know about a possible season 2 so far (spoilers for season 1 ahead).
Will there be a second season of A League of Their Own?
Yes, but it will be a short one. Amazon renewed the series, but only for a four-episode season, The Hollywood Reporter said on March 14. Sources told THR that the news came after “months of renegotiations with Sony to lower the show’s licensing fee and after the cast had to sign new deals given the order is for half the episodes that were featured in season one.” Reps for Amazon and Sony Pictures Television, which is producing the series, did not give a comment at the time.
At the show’s Television Critics Association panel in 2022, Graham implied that plans were in the works, saying, “We’ve already started writing and bringing the story for season two…Our hope is to shoot in like, mid-spring.”
He added, “This is a show that is more than a show to all of us and to every single person in the cast…and we’ve been pinching ourselves the whole time just about what it means to get to tell these stories 30 years after the movie came out. It’s been a life-changing experience and we already know what we want to do with season two.”
What is season 2 of A League of Their Own about?
At the end of season 1, the Rockford Peaches have just lost the championships, but in the most gracious way possible. Carson Shaw, played by Abbi Jacobson, was planning to leave both her husband and her newfound love, Greta Gill (D’Arcy Carden), when the former caught her smooching the latter. The potential repercussions of this discovery will likely be a part of season two, as will the pressures of keeping their sexual identity a secret.
Jo Deluca (Melanie Field) was traded off the Peaches, but as a series star, it’s possible the show will find a way of getting her back to Rockford.
And Max Chapman, played by Chantè Adams, is on the road and finally pitching baseball like she’s always dreamed. The show might explore her new adventures and the budding relationship with her new girlfriend and co-pitcher. The first season also left her bestie Clance Morgan (Gbemisola Ikumelo) pregnant and with her husband drafted to war. Will Max return home to help Clance through it all?
Who will return in the cast?
Most likely everyone mentioned above will be returning—Abbi Jacobson, D’Arcy Carden, Chanté Adams, Melanie Field, Gbemisola Ikumelo—plus the main Peaches who fill out the cast: Kelly McCormack as Jess McCready, Roberta Colindrez as Lupe García, Molly Ephraim as Maybelle Fox, Kate Berlant as Shirley Cohen, Priscilla Delgado as Esti González, Rae Gray as Terri, and Dale Dickey as Peaches chaperone Beverley. Though Max is traveling away from home, the series will hopefully get back to see her Uncle Bertie, played by Lea Robinson, and more of Max’s family.
