Everything We Know About the New Superman Movie

Director James Gunn has released the first extended look at his new Superman film, a reboot of the DC cinematic universe that stars David Corenswet as the titular character. (He also plays Clark Kent, but don’t tell anyone at the Daily Planet.) In a roundtable with IGN shared on December 17, Gunn revealed a bit about how this movie might play into future films from the DC world.

“Everything needs to stand by itself,” the director insisted. “I don’t want somebody to have to go see this movie and be relying on anything else. Now listen, once we get down the line, that may change a little bit.”

Gunn added that “there’s seeds being planted,” but his main focus is: “How are we making this movie the best we can be? And it’s going to stay like that as much as I can possibly make it like that.”

Here’s everything we know about the new Superman movie so far.

When will Superman be released?

Superman is set to debut in the U.S. on July 11, 2025.

Is there a trailer yet?

Released on Dec. 19, 2024, the new trailer offers a glimpse of what fans can expect from the first of several planned films intended to breathe new life into the DC characters. The dramatic cut reintroduces the world of Superman, his friends, his enemies, his romance with Lois Lane, and his faithful friend, Krypto the Superdog.

What will Superman be about?

Based on the trailer, the movie will touch on Superman’s origins, from his time on a Kansas farm to taking on a role at the Daily Planet, where he meets romantic interest Lois Lane. There are a number of DC characters in this film, and we get a glimpse of Lex Luthor in all his bald glory. It also seems as though Superman’s credibility amongst the people of Metropolitan City is at an all-time low. Crowds attack Superman and though they can’t physically hurt him, it definitely seems to sink his spirits.

New heroes for future films appear to be making their debut in this iteration of Superman’s story, including Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Green Lantern.

In his IGN interview, Gunn revealed that though Superman and Lex Luthor know of one another, this movie will show their first official clash. He also suggested that the relationship between Clark and Lois will be more intense than usual in Superman stories.

“The relationship between David and Rachel’s [characters] on screen is something I don’t think we’ve seen in—I hate to say stuff like this—but I don’t think it’s something we’ve ever seen [in] any superhero movie ever,” he said. “It’s a complicated relationship and we really get into it and there’s long scenes that are about their relationship and the way they relate and what it would be like for a person, who’s this incredibly intelligent, strong-headed, stubborn, skeptical journalist, to have a relationship with someone who can lift a skyscraper.”

He played coy when asked if Lois knows who Superman is.

“Well, we’ll see,” Gunn joked. “She knows who Superman is.”

Who is in the Superman cast?

Aside from Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan will be in the new movie as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor, Pruitt Taylor Vince is Jonathan Kent, Edi Gathegi plays Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced stars as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion is now Guy Gardner/Green Lantern.
