On Thursday, ELLE’s 2024 Music Issue cover star, Dua Lipa, attended the Time100 Gala in custom Chanel. The sheer dress had long sleeves and a plunging neckline, and was embroidered with crystals. At the center of the bodice, there was a signature black Chanel bow, with an elegant white broach in the center. There was also a cut out over her belly button to reveal her piercing.
Lipa later revealed the inspiration behind the dress on her Instagram Story. She shared a black-and-white photo of Jane Birkin in a similar style of dress, which she wore to the Artists Union’s Gala in Paris on the exact date 55 years before, April 25, 1969.
“My inspo for last nights dress ❤️,” she wrote over the photo.
Lipa was recognized as one of Time’s most influential people in the world. Not only did she attend the star-studded event, but she also performed. For the event, she kept her accessories minimal, adding only dainty silver rings and a thin drop necklace with matching earrings. Her burgundy hair cascaded down her shoulders in loose waves.
On the red carpet, Lipa posed with fellow honoree Fantasia Barrino, who was one of ELLE’s 2023 Women in Hollywood. Barrino wore a gloved, long-sleeve, open-back dress made entirely out of black sequins. She paired the look with a matching head scarf.
In Lipa’s interview for ELLE’s Music Issue, she spoke about her upcoming album, Radical Optimism, which drops on May 3.
“The record as a whole is more mature,” she shared. “I’m definitely not the same person I was when I wrote my first album. I’ve evolved and learned so much…taking it as it comes, not seeing anything as bad or something as a setback. That involves a lot of growing and understanding myself, knowing my worth, whether it be in business, love, or friendship.”
“I’m just a different person, so of course this record is going to be different,” Lipa added. “I have different thoughts, wants, needs, and perspectives. I’ve done a 180 on myself…I feel the most confident at this point in my life.”
