Everything We Know About the Daisy Jones and the Six TV Adaptation

Culture

If “Regret Me” is already stuck in your head, well, welcome to the Daisy Jones & the Six fan club. The new series, based on the beloved book by Taylor Jenkins Reid, is hurtling toward its release on Prime Video this year, and the latest footage—including music soundbites and a sneak peek of the ambitious, no-longer-fictional Aurora record—speaks of some very Stevie Nicks-esque things to come.

The adaptation stars Riley Keough as the titular Daisy Jones, as well as Sam Claflin, Suki Waterhouse, Josh Whitehouse, Will Harrison, Sebastian Chacon, and Camila Morrone as friends and (excepting Morrone) fellow members of smash-hit rock group The Six. The musical limited series, set in the 1970s and drawing a great deal of inspiration from Rumors-era Fleetwood Mac, is produced by Amazon Studios and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine.

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming project.

What’s Daisy Jones and the Six about?

Daisy and the Six is based on the 2019 novel of the same name, previously a pick for Witherspoon’s Book Club before her studio decided to adapt it. Penned by Reid, who also co-produced the series, the book follows the rise and fall of a renowned rock band as their romantic relationships, drug and alcohol addictions, and personal vendettas spur and derail their careers.

Keough plays lead singer Jones, described as someone “born into privilege but ignored by her selfish parents. She is a spirited and enigmatic singer/songwriter who comes of age and rises to rock superstardom against the backdrop of the L.A. music scene,” per Variety. Original music from the series will also be available through Amazon Music: The infamous Aurora record that set the fictional band’s star blazing will be released as a real-life album, featuring 11 cast-recorded tracks and set to debut at the same time as the show.

When does Daisy Jones and the Six come out?

Daisy Jones & the Six premieres on Prime Video on Friday, March 3, 2023. The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that the limited series would be 12 episodes long. While there is no trailer yet, Vanity Fair shared a number of first-look photos here.

Who’s in the cast?

As Jones, Keough has plenty of experience to draw on for the role. In 2010, she starred alongside Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning in The Runaways, about the rise of the band that introduced Joan Jett and Cherie Currie to the world. Keough also has a unique family tie: She’s the eldest grandchild of Elvis and Priscilla Presley.

Morrone will play Camila, girlfriend of lead singer Billy Dunne and, per Deadline, “the band’s center of gravity.” In the series, “she follows the love of her life in his pursuit of rock stardom only to discover her own potential along the way.”

The Hunger Games’ Claflin will take on Dunne himself, the band’s handsome frontman struggling to balance family life on the road.

Way back in 2020, Deadline reported a batch of additional cast members for the show, including Nabiyah Be (Black Panther) as Daisy’s friend Simone Jackson, Waterhouse (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) as female rock pioneer Karen Sirko, Whitehouse (The Knight Before Christmas) as band bassist Eddie Roundtree, Harrison as Billy’s brother Graham, and Chacon (Penny Dreadful: City of Angels) as drummer Warren Rhodes. Timothy Olyphant plays Rod Reyes and Tom Wright plays Teddy Price, Vanity Fair confirmed in a December 2022 story.

The cast will also play themselves—aged 20 years older—in documentary-style interview scenes, first glimpsed in a teaser trailer released in January 2023.

Niki Caro (Whale Rider, 2020’s Mulan) directed multiple episodes of the series, including the pilot, and also executive produced, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In addition to Caro, Witherspoon, and Reid, Lauren Neustadter of Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine will executive produce along with Brad Mendelsohn and showrunner Will Graham. Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber (500 Days of Summer, The Spectacular Now) created the series and will also executive produce.

What will the music be like?

The series will feature original songs using lyrics from Reid’s book and embodying the sound of the ’70s rock era. While the story is inspired by Fleetwood Mac, the Daisy Jones producers didn’t want the show’s music to sound like “an imitation of any specific group,” according to Vanity Fair. So they tapped Blake Mills, who’s played with Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, and Tony Berg as lead songwriters, creating 25-plus tracks that play throughout the season. The duo collaborated with a number of real-life artists, including Phoebe Bridgers, Marcus Mumford, and Jackson Browne. Book fans will recognize songs mentioned in the novel, including “Regret Me” and “Aurora.” (The soundtrack will be released on March 3 via Atlantic Records.)

Keough and Claflin sing with their real voices in the series—there is no dubbing—and all cast members played their own instruments, per VF.

Is there a trailer?

A teaser released on January 25, 2023, revealed the first few sounds of “Regret Me,” which sounds as catchy as it was promised, and a few clips of Keough demonstrating her rock roots. Take a look below.
