Sydney Sweeney sashayed onto the Met Gala red carpet—after being stuck in NYC traffic, which doesn’t care about your celebrity status—donning an all-white Tory Burch convertible ensemble that allowed her glam team to creatively execute the night’s “Gilded Glamour” theme, especially around her doe eyes.

The Euphoria actress’s beauty squad included celebrity makeup artist Melissa Hernandez, who used all Armani Beauty products on the star’s sultry look. Sweeney served a smokey eye on the carpet and left nary a crumb. “We wanted to contrast the elegant structure and glitter tulle overlay of Sydney’s Tory Burch gown, so we went with a hazy, lived-in smokey eye and a muted matte sheer lip,” Hernandez tells ELLE.com. “I wanted the overall look to feel effortless and cool, yet fierce and unexpected.”

The art of a smokey eye is no easy feat, and one can quickly wind up looking like Natalie Portman’s character in The Black Swan (unless that’s your thing, no judgment here). Smudging and smoking can quickly go from sexy to raccoon eyes in the blink of a watery eye or heavy hand. “A foolproof way to achieve an effortless smokey eye is to use cream or liquid eyeshadows,” adds Hernandez. “You can simply swipe it over your eyelids and blend out the edges for effortless, show-stopping eyes.” Her favorite product to achieve this is the Armani Beauty Eye Tint Long-Lasting Liquid Eyeshadow. “The colors are absolutely beautiful and they blend like a dream,” she gushes before adding, “they are perfect for beginners.”

Hernandez wanted Sweeney’s eye makeup “to feel hazy and lived in,” so she used the Armani Beauty Smooth Silk Eye Pencil in shades 4 and 12 “to emphasize the eyes,” yet offer a soft look. “The pencils have a beautiful silky finish that makes for easy blending,” she states. It doesn’t matter your skin tone or eye shape—“this technique is flattering on everyone and suitable for all skin types,” says Hernandez. To blend out the edges for a sooty, edgy feel, she used Armani Beauty Neo Nude Melting Color Balm in 20. Blending the edges delivers a softer look that’s not as harsh.
