Margot Robbie Dressed Like Barbie Twice in Australia Ahead of Barbie Movie Release

Culture

Margot Robbie has already channeled modern Barbie twice and Clueless character Cher Horowitz on her Barbie press tour. Now, she’s going back in time—sartorially, that is—to pay tribute to the first-ever Barbie, released in 1959. On Australia’s Bondi Beach today, Robbie dressed in a black and white striped dress by Hervé Léger. Her hair was styled in a curly ponytail. She was joined by director Greta Gerwig and her co-stars Issa Rae and America Ferrera.

She switched into a second retro-inspired look for more press, wearing a white strawberry print belted Moschino minidress with the same hairstyle and different white-rimmed sunglasses. Robbie appeared enthusiastic while posing:

The throwback fashion looks mark a fun pivot for a press tour that has been full of unexpected but creative homages so far. There’s a lot more to come, too: Robbie and Ryan Gosling announced earlier that the Barbie press tour will happen in eight cities: Sydney (where Robbie is now), Toronto (where Gosling is now), Seoul, Mexico City, Los Angeles (where they did their initial photo call), London, Berlin, and New York.

Robbie recently spoke to Fandango about how the film crew managed to get the now-viral trailer shot of her arched Barbie feet.

“It was probably about eight takes. Wasn’t that many,” she said. “I walked up, we had little sticky bits on the floor, double-sided tape for the shoes, so they wouldn’t come off, so I could get my feet out of them. And I was holding onto a bar. But that’s it. I wasn’t in a harness or anything like that. I just walked up, kind of held onto the bar above [the] camera.” She stressed that using her own body for shots like that is important to her: “I always try to do my own inserts.”
