Actress Olivia Munn and comedian John Mulaney had a whirlwind romance starting in 2021. By September of that year, the couple announced they were expecting their first baby. Their son, Malcolm, was born that November. Over Fourth of July weekend in 2024, the couple took an even greater step, tying the knot in New York.

So how did their love story begin and lead to marriage and a family? Here, relive the couple’s complete history.

January 2015

On Jan. 13, 2022, Munn shared with the Huffington Post how she met Mulaney. At the time, he was newly married to Anna Marie Tendler, but Munn was fascinated by them.

“We were at a wedding together and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, do you and your fiancée [Tendler, whom Mulaney actually married in 2014] want to go have dinner or something and go hang out?’” she recalled. “At first, it was cool, and then I kept going up to him at the wedding, like, ‘So you having fun?’ I was just so obsessed with hanging out with and talking with him.”

December 2020

Mulaney checked into rehab after struggling with addiction. On Sept. 12, 2019, Mulaney opened up about his struggles to Esquire. Munn offered her support to Mulaney on X, then known as Twitter. She wrote, “Sending SO MUCH love and support to John Mulaney. You got this.”

May 2021

On May 10, 2021, Tendler and Mulaney announced their breakup.

“John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work,” his rep told Page Six.

Tendler released a statement to People, saying, “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage. I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”

On May 13, 2021, People confirmed that Mulaney and Munn are dating. “This is very new, they’re taking it slowly,” a source close to Mulaney told the outlet. “They met at church in Los Angeles.”

September 2021

In September 2021, Mulaney revealed Munn was pregnant with their first baby on Late Night with Seth Meyer.

“I packed a lot into this [year]. Is it September now?” he added. “I went to rehab in September, I got out in October, I moved out of my home from my ex-wife … Then in the spring, I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia. I got into this relationship that’s been really beautiful with someone incredible. And we’re having a baby together. I was nervous when I was about to say the news! Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself in this early journey out of recovery.”

November 2021

In an interview with the LA Times on Nov. 16, 2021, Munn shared insights on preparing to be a parent and her relationship with Mulaney. “He’s so funny, and he’s so articulate, and he’s so smart…The first time he made [him make a] joke, I remember laughing. I’d be with him on the road, and I would hear him tell this joke, and I did feel a sense of healing with it.”

On Nov. 24, 2021, Munn gave birth to the couple’s first baby, their son they named Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney.

December 2021

On Dec. 24 2021, Mulaney shared a picture of Malcolm on Instagram, captioning the post: “Meet Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney. He has his whole life ahead of him. He hasn’t even tried seltzer yet. I’m very in love with him and his whole deal. Happy Holidays.”

Munn shared a similar post and wrote, “My Golden Ox baby. Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney. Happy Holidays.”

February 2022

While hosting an episode of SNL, the comedian talked about addiction, rehab, the intervention that saved him, and his new life. “‘Life is a lot better and happier now,” he said. “I have a 12-week-old son. He is a pretty cool guy for someone who can’t vote. His legs are like little calzones, and I want to eat him.”

He recalled, “We were in the delivery room. My girlfriend had just given birth to him, and he’s crying a little, so they bring him over to this warmer on the other side of the delivery room, and they put them on the warmer under this big bright light, and light is just shining in his eyes. He just looked up at the light, and he was annoyed. But he didn’t say anything. I was like, ‘That’s my son.’ A polite man in an uncomfortable situation, but he’s not going to make a fuss.”

June 2022

On June 24, 2022, Munn and Mulaney were photographed holding hands while walking to Madison Square Garden in New York for the comedian’s performance.

April 2023

The actress shared photos of her family in Las Vegas. In one Instagram story, Munn is seen playing with her baby on a hotel room floor. She captioned it, “Partying in Vegas looks a lot different now.”

January 2024

On Jan. 9, 2024, the couple attended their first Oscars in Los Angeles.

March, 2024

Munn shared a candid Instagram post on March 13, 2024 where she disclosed her breast cancer diagnosis and five surgeries.

“I’m so thankful to my friends and family for loving me through this,” she wrote. “I’m so thankful to John for the nights he spent researching what every operation and medication meant and what side effects and recovery I could expect…For being there before I went into each surgery and being there when I woke up, always placing framed photos of our little boy Malcolm so it would be the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.”

In an interview with Vogue on May 12, 2024, Mulaney shared his experience: “‘Olivia and I have been through a lot of things together in the past couple years, just side-by-side, supporting each other through anything. And as her guy, I felt both scared and protective. Even with Malcolm in her lap and me there holding her hand, she was going to be physically fighting this disease alone.’”

July 2024

Over Fourth of July weekend, Munn and Mulaney got married in an intimate ceremony in New York, according to CNN. People reported that they had their wedding at a friend’s house with only their son and one witness present. Munn’s The Newsroom co-star Sam Waterston officiated.
