Read Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Lacy’ Lyrics

On her new album Guts, Olivia Rodrigo delivers a new collection of devastating hits, and “Lacy” is certainly one of them. The fourth track on the new album, right after her lead single “Vampire,” is an aching ballad about obsessing over, envying, and adoring another girl.

In the verses, she sings about a “dazzling starlet, Bardot reincarnate” with “skin like puff pastry” and “eyes white as daisies.” It’s a person she can’t stay away from: “I see you everywhere / The sweetest torture one could bear,” she says in the chorus.

Rodrigo sums up her feelings best in the closing lines: “Lacy, oh, Lacy / I just loathe you lately / And I despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you / Yeah, I despise my rotten mind and how much it worships you.”

The singer hasn’t shared who “Lacy” is about in particular, and she hasn’t with past songs. When addressing speculation about “Vampire,” she told The Guardian, “I mean, I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I’ve never done that before in my career and probably won’t. I think it’s better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing.”

Listeners ate it all up, from Rodrigo’s vivid storytelling to her whispery vocals. The lyrics especially resonated with queer fans, who expressed their love on social media.

Prior to the Guts release, Rodrigo also told SiriusXM Hits 1 that her songs can often be about multiple people or even a fantasy.

“Lots of the time I write something that’s kind of like an amalgamation of lots of different people, or I write a lot of songs out of fantasy sometimes too,” she said. “I think something that I’m really proud of on this record [GUTS], too, is that lots of the songs are more about growing up than they are about breakups or falling in love or anything. It’s just very much me becoming a young adult. And so it’s very introspective.”

She also told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1: “In hindsight, I think that a lot of this album is about the confusion that comes with becoming a young adult and figuring out your place in this world and figuring out who you want to be and who you want to hang out with and all of that stuff. I think that that’s probably an experience that everyone has had in their life before, is just that rising from that disillusionment.”

Last night after the album drop, Rodrigo posted a TikTok pointing to the inspirations behind Guts as a whole. She lipsyncs a Billie Eilish quote saying, “Every lyric: exactly how I feel. Look at my mouth: It’s exactly how I feel. It’s about my life.”

[Verse 1]
Lacy, oh, Lacy
Skin like puff pastry
Aren’t you the sweetest thing on this side of Hell?
Dear angel Lacy
Eyes white as daisies
Did I ever tell you that I’m not doin’ well?

[Chorus]
Ooh, I care, I care, I care
Like perfume that you wear, I linger all the time
Watching, hidden in plain sight
And ooh, I try, I try, I try
But it takes over my life, I see you everywhere
The sweetest torture one could bear

[Verse 2]
Smart, sexy Lacy
I’m losin’ it lately
I feel your compliments like bullеts on skin
Dazzling starlet
Bardot reincarnate
Wеll, aren’t you the greatest thing to ever exist?

[Chorus]
Ooh, I care, I care, I care
Like ribbons in your hair, my stomach’s all in knots
You got the one thing that I want
Ooh, I try, I try, I try
Try to rationalize, people are people
But it’s like you’re made of angel dust

[Bridge]
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh

[Outro]
Lacy, oh, Lacy
It’s like you’re out to get me
You poison every little thing that I do
Lacy, oh, Lacy
I just loathe you lately
And I despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you
Yeah, I despise my rotten mind and how much it worships you
