Amid the looming threat of war and crisis in Ukraine, it can feel pretty senseless to turn your attention to the seemingly frivolous fashion world. But in lieu of hitting pause on the already-existing calendar or exhibiting a dismissive “show must go on” energy, you could try taking a cue from Silvia Tcherassi and do your part to turn a dire situation into something a bit more hopeful.
On Saturday afternoon, the Colombian designer, known for her bold and colorful resortwear pieces, put on a charity fashion show for her spring 2022 collection, with all proceeds benefitting Save the Children, a long-running global organization that works to improve the lives of children across the world, and provides emergency aid during impending war and other conflicts.
Speaking exclusively to ELLE.com, Tcherassi shared her excitement over presenting a runway show—a rare move for the designer: “Fashion comes to life on the runway and we have become accustomed to experiencing it through social media or images on our phones, which doesn’t fully encompass the extent of the magic,” she said. “This collection is meant to be seen in motion.”
The line, inspired by Miami Modernism and shown in Punta Cana to support Tcherassi’s new boutique at the Tortuga Bay Puntacana Resort & Club, was rife with clashing prints and unique styling details, like pants tucked into sandals; the models sashaying down the runway allowed for attendees to see the fall and movement of the fabrics, which flowed beautifully as the Caribbean sun set.
After her initial remarks, Tcherassi quickly changed course to acknowledge the escalating situation abroad, “It’s so much more meaningful that it [the show] is for charity,” she said.
