Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas have broken their silence after reports broke yesterday that Jonas filed for divorce from Turner. Both posted identical Instagrams to their grids that had a joint statement.
They said:
After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.
Jonas and Turner first started dating in 2016. They got engaged about a year later, then married in May 2019. They welcomed their first daughter in 2020 and their second in 2022.
Turner spoke glowingly about married life with Jonas in an interview with ELLE in April 2020.
“I feel like the only thing that’s changed for me is having this incredible sense of security. Just the word husband and the word wife—it just solidifies the relationship. I love being married. I think it’s wonderful. I’m sure we’ll have our hiccups and our different things. But right now, it’s like the security and the safety is everything.”
Jonas spoke in April 2022 about how important protecting the couple’s private life is to him. In terms of balancing what to share and what to keep private, “it’s really being decisive on what you want,” he said. “You wanna be really protective over how much you wanna share in your personal life, and I feel like as artists, we get the opportunity to express our heart through our music, and so that’s where I’m personal and honest as I can be.”
“I don’t really try to hide too much, but I think it’s about protecting what you keep close to your heart,” he continued. “I’ve sorta always been like that. But, I feel like in the last two years, you wanna take a little more time off. I’d say I love what I do, and I’m so grateful I get to do this every day and still perform and make music for a living, so I’ll take none of that away. But if I’m able to get home sooner, then I’m always a little happier.”
