The Crown Gives Its First Look at the New Princess Diana and Prince Charles

Culture

In the midst of continued real-life royal family drama, the fake royal family of Netflix’s hit series, The Crown, is having a ball excavating history for Her Majesty’s juiciest chapters. And it appears the next season will be the most scandalous yet. Season 5 will, of course, focus primarily on the doomed marriage between Prince Charles and Princess Diana, first laid out in season 4 by Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin, but now continued by newcomers Dominic West (The Wire) and Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby).

Debicki’s casting was first confirmed in August 2020, when the actress provided the statement, “Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many. It is my true privilege and honor to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from Episode One.” West’s own role was confirmed independently by numerous media outlets, but was only officially announced by Netflix today, when the streaming giant released its first sneak-peek images of Debicki and West in their iconic roles.

Looking characteristically forlorn in the stills, West and Debicki will play an embattled Charles and Diana in season 5, each desperately attempting to keep the facade of their romance alive while Charles continues his love affair with his eventual second wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles. Per The Independent, season 5 will also include the bombshell BBC interview in which Princess Diana revealed the affair to the world, saying, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

West and Debicki will join Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, and Jonny Lee Miller as Prime Minister John Major. Netflix has yet to set an official release date for season 5, which means we’ll have to stay satiated on these sneak peek images until the episodes drop in 2022.
