My boyfriend and I first bonded over Olehenriksen Banana Bright Eye Crème (spoiler: it’s a good product, and I was impressed he uses it). Now, trying skincare products has become one of our love languages—first I got him hooked on Supergoop Glowscreen Sunscreen, and this week we tried something else that’s new for him: CBD skincare.
Barker Wellness—musician Travis Barker’s line—launched an edited collection of skincare this morning, all with the brand’s proprietary ingredient, CBD.
“After playing drums, training for tours, boxing for years, and training Muay Thai, recovery became a big issue for me,” Barker says. “Just figuring out how to keep going and not break down.”
Once he honed in on the strains of CBD that worked best for him (for the uninitiated: different cannabinoids work on different pathways in the body, and can help with sleep, focus, or reduce inflammation and muscle soreness post-workout), he turned his elaborately tattooed head to skincare.
The first drop has five products: the 2-in-1 Cleanser and Mask, Daily Moisturizer, Eye Serum, Face Serum, and Renewal Balm. Every single product has a blend of CBD and CBG “to help your skin do things like reduce redness while keeping it high quality, clean, and cruelty-free.”
Last week, Barker’s wife, Kourtney Kardashian, stopped by the ELLE office to discuss her newest foray into the world of wellness. Kardashian Barker shared that her relationship is “giving me so much confidence to be my truest self. I’m where I am meant to be.”
It’s obvious from talking to Barker that this support goes both ways.
“Kourtney has taught me consistency is key when it comes to skincare,” Barker says. “And now I’m seeing results. That’s why I wanted the skincare line to be simple, so it’s straightforward for anyone to follow.”
With that in mind, my boyfriend and I reviewed three of Barker Wellness’ top products. Keep scrolling for our findings.
2-in-1 Face Cleanser and Mask
What it is: It feels like a cream cleanser, but is filled with squalane and copper, so it’s gentle enough to use daily, as well as kaolin clay to vacuum out the day’s grime from pores.
My boyfriend: This is my favorite of the products. It’s like a mud bath in a tube—very silky and really makes my skin feel clean. I will definitely be using it as a weekly mask.
Me: Ah, the classic two-in-one trope for products. I like a bit more of an aggressive clean, but the tiny bit of grit in kaolin is nice for daily use. It’s good for one part of a two-step cleanse.
Daily Moisturizer
What it is: A straightforward formula with aloe vera and vitamin E to maintain the skin’s health.
Barker: If I’m running out the door and only have time for one product, this is the one I grab. It’s lightweight, but my skin still feels so hydrated after using it.
My boyfriend: I used to think I liked some sort of scent in lotion, but now that I’m using one without it, I think it’s really nice, because the entire product just disappears into your skin. It absorbs really quickly and doesn’t leave you shiny.
Me: This isn’t quite heavy enough for my skin, which is super dry normally. But on warmer days, or ones where I’m wearing foundation, it’s a good base under makeup. It doesn’t pill or cause my liner to budge, either.
Renewal Balm
What it is: A butter-yellow balm made of olive oil and candelilla wax that melts quickly and feels light on the skin.
My boyfriend: Can I use this on my body? This reminds me of what I know about CBD products, and I want to use it anywhere my skin feels a little rough, like my hands, elbows, wherever.
Me: Warm up just a little between your palms and this magically melts into an oil. I’m all about more-is-more when it comes to hydration, so this is the perfect final step to seal in my entire skincare routine, especially at night.
