Travis Kelce didn’t wait long to share the full story of how his viral appearance with Taylor Swift onstage at her final London Eras Tour show came to be. He told his brother, Jason Kelce, on today’s episode of New Heights that the whole thing was his idea, and he was afraid of just one thing in particular.
He first detailed the private conversation the couple had where he pitched the idea, giving a rare look into their relationship dynamic.
“I initially mentioned it [joining her onstage] to Tay,” he began. “I was like, ‘How funny would it be if I just rolled out on one of the bikes during the 1989 era?’ She started laughing and she was like, ‘Would you seriously be up for doing something like that?’ And I was like, ‘What?! I would love to do that. Are you kidding me? I’ve seen the show enough, might as well put me to work here.’ Sure enough, she found the perfect part of the show for me to come in. There was no bike in case I ran into somebody else or hit one of the dancers or anything. It [the “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” segment] was like the safest option.”
“It’s such a fun, playful part of the show, and it was like the perfect time for me to go up there, just be a ham, and have some fun not only with her…but to get the crowd excited for the rest of the show,” he added.
He spoke glowingly of her backup dancers and how determined he was to do his girlfriend proud while appearing with her. “I was up there with three professionals,” he said, referring to Swift and her dancers. “You can do no wrong when Taylor’s onstage because she’s the best at doing it. The one thing I told myself was, ‘Do not drop the baby. Do not drop this. Do not drop Taylor on your way over to this damn couch.’ The golden rule was do not drop Taylor. Get her to the couch.”
Thankfully, he succeeded. “I didn’t disappoint Taylor, and that’s all that really matters,” he said. “That was my number one goal: ‘Do not fuck this up. Do not drop Taylor.’”
He teased at the end that he could be back on tour for more appearances: “Shout-out to Tay for letting me jump up onstage with her. Who knows? Might not be the last time. You guys will have to keep showing up for the Eras Tour to see if I pop out of the stage and whatnot.”
