Iris Apfel is a fashion and design legend, known for her unique style and bold energy. When she passed away in March of this year, the world (and our social feeds) were a little dimmer. Dr. Scholl’s Shoes is an iconic American heritage brand that has famously meshed comfort with original style for 100 years. In her final days, Apfel paired with the shoemaker to celebrate this century milestone and create a collector’s edition capsule. It released on August 21st, just ahead of what would have been her 103rd birthday, and the results are as unique as she was.
“Fashion is about expressing who you are on that day or that moment,” Apfel said of the collection. “I created this collection with Dr Scholl’s to express myself—the many sides of my fashion personality.”
Iris Apfel x Dr. Scholl’s Shoes marks the icon’s final fashion collaboration, and the seven-piece collection is an expression of how she saw the world. It was designed with prints sourced from Apfel’s archives and personal touches from her life woven throughout. “It was an honor working so closely with Iris and her team,” says Katie Moore, Senior Design Director at Dr. Scholl’s Shoes. “The intimacy of this collaboration enabled us to create a collection that truly celebrates Iris.”
For instance, the intricate Tiger Print used throughout the collection was a personal favorite of Iris’ and an ode to her eternal love for patterns, especially those featuring animals. Other design details include special touches like ornamentation of her iconic glasses and blue-green buckles and studs on the shoes inspired by Apfel’s love of turquoise jewelry. “Through the design process, we got a privileged peek into her history, making this partnership all the more meaningful,” Moore says.
Making this first collaboration for Dr. Scholl’s Shoes even more special, Apfel’s influence had the brand expanding beyond its iconic Original Sandal into its latest offerings of clogs and sneakers. It embodies a true celebration of creative innovation, which is shown in the collection below and within the pages of Apfel’s last book, “Colorful,” where she shares her design doctrine and greatest inspirations.
“I crave color. Color is life—it brightens the spirit. It brightens the soul. My collection with Dr Scholl’s is an homage to color and my love for it,” Apfel said in a statement.
