Exes Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes’ reunion at the Copa América finals sparked speculation that the pair, who briefly dated again last year, could be giving their romance one more go. The reality is, as sources made clear to People and Us Weekly, that the two singers are really just friends now.
A source clarified to People that Cabello and Mendes hadn’t been planning to attend the Miami sporting event together. “They were there coincidentally,” the source said. “She actually took her dad as her date.”
Us Weekly’s insider went further, saying, “Shawn and Camilla are not dating. They are just friends.” They added that the former couple “will go months without speaking [but are] always friendly.” When they see each other, no matter how long the gap, it’s “as if no time has passed.”
Cabello addressed her and Mendes’ brief 2023 reconciliation attempt in March during her Call Her Daddy interview. On why it happened, Cabello explained, via Billboard, “It’s crazy because I’m kind of impulsive in that way. If I feel it, I say it. I would rather say it and see what happens and then wake up the next day and find out that it’s been heavily documented. I opted for that route. It is what it is. It was a fun time; it was a fun moment.”
“I will always care about him and love him. He’s such a good person,” she continued. “I’m lucky ’cause some people have exes who are awful, and he is not. He’s a really kind, good person.”
Breaking up again, “it wasn’t even like a decision,” she added. “I think you’re just kind of like, ‘Yeah this doesn’t really…it’s not a fit—it doesn’t feel right.’ Luckily, I was in a place in my life where…it took us both less time to be like, ‘This doesn’t feel right, and we don’t really need to try so hard to make it work. It’s all good, let’s move on.’”
Mendes and Cabello originally dated for a little over two years, from summer 2019 to November 2021. When they first broke up, they shared the news in a joint statement, saying, “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship, but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”
