Why Suits Doesn’t Have a Season 10

Culture

The former USA show Suits has been released in full on Netflix, from season one through season nine. And yet for fans, that’s not enough. Where’s season ten?

Though there are rumors of an upcoming new reboot of the popular show or perhaps a spinoff, season ten of Suits is not likely to happen. Here’s why.

They only planned for nine seasons.

Series creator Aaron Korsh has said there was never a plan to continue past nine and he wanted the final season to feel like a big deal with a great finale. He didn’t want to leave it open ended, according to Deadline. But the way he ended it had been on his mind for some time.

“I think what happens is you have an idea and you don’t even necessarily know you have the idea,” he explained. “I remember the current trajectory for the last 10 episodes is something that occurred to me probably a year or two ago but I had forgotten about it.”

The cast changed too much.

Famously, cast member Meghan Markle went on to do other things, meaning she would not be returning for more seasons. Gina Torres also left, though she would go on to star in a spinoff for one season about her character’s life in Chicago. After the seventh season, Patrick J. Adams left his role as Mike, though he was present for a recurring role later on. Mike was the main protagonist for much of the series and yet they did continue when he left after some discussion.

“You can never know that one of your stars is going to marry the Prince of England, and Patrick decided not to return, so we had a choice whether to keep going after season 7,” said Korsh. “We decided that the original plan was a 16-episode season 8 and a 10-episode season 9, let’s see if we can do that.”

They ended up welcoming Katherine Heigl into the fold, which extended the life of the series. But it is relevant that all these questions were coming up already at the end of season seven. Keeping a series going for so long is a tall order, especially when trying to maintain the ensemble chemistry that drew in early viewers.
